What to Know About Utah Lake
Utah Lake is 24 miles long and 13 miles wide. This makes it one of the largest natural freshwater lakes west of the Mississippi River. It also means the lake has plenty of surface area for recreation. During the summer, camping, fishing, boating, and picnicking are common activities. During the fall and winter, hunting, ice fishing, and ice skating take the stage.
The lake is home to 13 species of fish, including the endangered June Sucker. You’ll also find a large amount of carp, which were introduced in the 1880s. The carp have destroyed a lot of the vegetation on the lake floor, which has created problems for various fish species and has loosened a lot of sediment. This along with the shallowness of the water can contribute to the lake’s murky appearance, especially on windy days.
What to Know About Utah Lake Authority
Utah Lake Authority was recently formed to replace the Utah Lake Commission. Our goals are to educate the public on safe use of the lake and promote proper resource use and protection. We also strive to maintain and develop recreational access points.
